History of laboratory

The laboratory of lithology was established in 1938 under the leadership of V. I. Popov. In 1947, the Department of Geology and Geochemistry of Oil and Gas was established; until 1959, the department was headed by A.M.Gabrilyan, O.M.Akramkhodjaev; In 1993, this department was reorganized. In 1995, the Laboratory of Lithology and Petroleum Geology was established as a result of the merger of the Laboratory of Oil and Gas Geology and the Laboratory of Lithology.  The heads of the laboratory who worked in this laboratory were V.I.Popov (1938-1947), A.M.Gabrilya (1947-1959), O.M.Akramkhodjaev (1993-1997), Doctor of Geological Sciences, S.T. Khusanov (1997-2006, Doctor of Min.Sciences) A.A. Koldaev ( 2006-2015) Doctor of Geol. Sciences A.D. Gonchar (2015-2022) Doctor of Geol.- Sciences of Philosophy (PhD) N.T. Soatov (2022-2023).

The main strategic direction of the laboratory

The main strategic direction of the laboratory is to study the composition, structure, and formation processes of sedimentary rocks, as well as the patterns of their occurrence, and to develop geochemical criteria for predicting and exploring them.

Scientific bases of the laboratory

The basic trend of the Laboratory is study of sedimentary rocks and mineralization, connected with them, of all ages of the Phanerozoic: from the Lower Paleozoic – Upper Proterozoic (Gold-bearing of black shale series) up to the Neogene inclusive. It were compiled 7 models of mineragenic maps of Uzbekistan: Map of the Neogenic – Anthropogenic natural salts (I.V.Rubanov), Map of the crusts of weathering (A.I.Pak, A.A.Koldaev), Map of celestite (T.K.Korzhauv), Map of bentonite clays (M.M.Mirsaidov), Map of formation of quartzy sands of the Paleogene (M.Z.Zakirov), Map of copper sandstones of the Lower Cretaceous red beds (P.A.Chistyakov, M.A.Baskakova), Map of halogenic Upper Jurassic (M.M.Mirsaidov).

Some deposits were discovered: oil deposit Lyalmikar (A.M.Gabrilyan), deposit of palygorskite clays Kamyshbashi, phosphorite deposit Djeroy, deposits of quartzy sands: Kulatay (I.V.Rubanov), Aidarma (T.K.Karzhauv, N.Ibadullaev), deposits of potash salts Tyubegatan (N.P.Petrov et al.), deposit of mirabilite Akkala (I.V.Rubanov), danburite manifestations (D.P.Ishniyazov, N.P.Petrov), new type of magnesite deposit (saltierra type) Urumkuduk, Saylyaukuduk (T.K.Karzhauv), mumiyo deposit (Z.Kh.Khakimov). For the first time in the Central Asia molybdenum mineralization was discovered within the roof of primary kaolines of Angren. New type of base metal mineralization was studied by E.L.Abramovich.)

Recommendations on using of sedimentary rocks in economics were worked out: gaize-like clays of Karmane deposit were recommended to use in the Ferghana oil-refining plant, crimson clays of Shorsu deposit – in the Ferghana drain-pipe plant, bentonite clays of Beshtyube deposit  – in building plant in Tashauz town, potash salts of Tyubegatan deposit – for production of potassium fertilizers, using burnt rocks in cement industry, etc.

On the Aral Sea problem prognosis of drainage was offered and were eorked out measures of struggle against unhealthy consequences of lowering of the Aral Sea level (P.A.Chistyakov, I.V.Rubanov, D.P.Ishniyazov). In sphere of oil-gas geology geologic-genetic preconditions for oil-gas-bearing productive series and tectonics of the Phanerozoic section within the Western Uzbekistan and Ust-Yurt are studied (A.V.Kirshin), as well as paleogeography and biocenosis of the Mesozoic sedimentary basins of Uzbekistan (S.T.Khusanov), stratigraphy and flora of the Upper Paleozoic (T.A.Masumova).

On the Laboratory initiative and assistance was created “Uzbekistan Paleontologists’ Society” (Chairman – Doctor of Sc. S.T.Khusanov), which holds conferences annually.

In the Laboratory were trained 11 Doctors of Sc. and 24 Candidates of Sc. 35 monographs and more than 300 papers were published.

Current scientific research in the laboratory

In the region of southern Uzbekistan, scientific research work is being carried out on the topic of determining the manifestations of carbonate raw materials suitable for the development of high-tech microcalcite products.
